Basically you only have to remember that kingies are suckers for anything that moves fast through the water. The faster the better! It is in this way that using metal jigs, such as Grim Reaper Lures can land you a feed and a heap of fun really easily. How? First you need to find where a good concentration of kingies are lurking. This is really easier than you would think. Around most of our deeper reef areas and isolated knobs, you will over the summer find schools of usually small "rat" kingfish. These fish are commonly in the 4-10kg size range. Using your fish-finder you will find these schools in mid water, usually slightly down current of a prominent bump on the bottom, showing up on your sounder as an incredibly dense blob. If you have a color sounder, this high density blob or H.D.B. (yes, that is the technical term) is invariably a bright red mass, often reading in larger schools as a false bottom! Schools of kingfish like this are prime targets for speed jigging success.
