While it can be difficult to get hooks into fish, it can sometimes be a greater challenge to get them back out.
This is made especially more difficult if the fish has teeth or a sting in its tail, as is the case of sharks, barracouta and stingrays and you don't wish to bring them aboard.
Gray Shepherd is an Auckland based angler and inventor who has come up with a Fishermans Mate dehooking device that makes unhooking and/or releasing fish a doddle.
Like most good ideas, this is simple and easy to operate.
The Fishermans Mate, available in a number of head sizes and handle lengths to suit everything from blue cod and pannie snapper up to kingfish, is basically a ball on a stick. The secret is in the ball. It is able to revolve on an axis and a cambered slot allows the line to slip into a hole that is large enough to comfortably take a hook.
The device is run down the line; anywhere on the trace will do - the hook engaged via the hole and with a simple push or a twist, the hook is removed. No fuss, no danger and with minimal stress and handling for the fish.
The smaller models will be particularly useful for removing hooks from blue cod, especially in the Marlborough Sounds where in certain areas all cost must be returned to the water unharmed.
I have had a Fishermans Mate for some time and while I don't do a great deal of bait fishing, I can attest to how well it works. It is most effective when a single hook rig is used but with a little manipulation it also removes double and ledger rigged hooks with a little practice.
It is a matter of fitting the ball over the trace between the two hooks or in the case of a ledger rig, the branch line. The rest is as per the plan; push and or twist to remove the swallowed hook.
The advantage this remover has over some hook removal devices, is that you don't need to be able to see the hook to make it work. The device is slid down the line until the hook is engaged and with a little push it is removed.
For those wanting to put a fish back, this is probably the least invasive way to remove the hook, ensuring minimal damage to the fish. A thoroughly useful tool that due to its composition has nothing to rust and leave ugly stains on your boat.
It is also light and compact enough to be part of the surfcasters/land based anglers kit. For a demonstration check out the www.fishdehook.com or view a short video on the magazines website
The Fishermans Mate is available from a number of leading tackle outlets.
